I have long been an advocate of using web servers in the classroom, but I would not recommend any product from Microsoft because it costs too much money and is using illegal practices to harm the market and customers. Instead, I use Apache on GNU/Linux. I can also use the same machine for databases, dynamic websites like Wikipedia, Coppermine Photogallery, and local search engines. The same machine can boot diskless thin clients over the network using LTSP. This is a great solution for teachers because they only need to control one machine to control all the processes on their system, like Johnny browsing when he should be typing... Low powered thin clients are cheap and long lasting. Essentially, they show the pictures and receive the clicks and most of the work is done on the server. This setup is easy to implement for a classroom or a lab. It can be done for a whole school, but you need some tech smarts for that. To set up an LTSP server, most teachers need only boot a CD from Ubuntu, K12LTSP to get an automatic install on a machine with two NICs.
