World
Teachers' Day is celebrated on 5 Oct every year to commemorate the signing of
the UNESCO-ILO 1966 Recommendation on the Status of Education Personnel.
The over-arching
theme of the event is "Quality Teachers for Quality Education" and
the sub-theme this year is "Better working conditions for Teachers means
Better Learning Conditions for Learners".
The day is
marked by all education workers around the world through the organisation of
activities that range from celebrating the teaching profession to lobbying
their government to implement the 1966 Recommendation.
Since 1997,
with the signing of the ILO Recommendation on the Status of Higher Education
Personnel, 5 October is also celebrated by colleagues in the higher education
and research sector.
